10 Best Band Anime to Stream in the US: Bocchi the Rock!, Girls Band Cry and 8 More

Before a new band in Japan plays a small live house (a club venue), it is usually handed a ticket quota: a set number of tickets the members have to sell themselves, and the band pays for any it cannot sell. Musicians call it the noruma, from the Russian word for a work norm. Bocchi the Rock! is set around a live house in Shimokitazawa modeled on the real club Shelter, and its sixth episode hands a girl with no friends a five-ticket quota.

That is the kind of detail Japanese band anime are built on, so I sorted this list by one question: what is the band for? In K-On! it is something to do after school. In Girls Band Cry it is proof that a dropout can survive on her own. In Ave Mujica it is a mask.

Bocchi the Rock! is the one I have finished, and when I wrote about it for Japanese readers, the comparison they kept searching for was K-On!. For the other nine I stuck to what I could confirm from Japan: the premise, who made the music, and which US service carries it. Two famous titles are missing for a plain reason: in our October check, neither Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad nor Detroit Metal City was on any US subscription service.

1. Bocchi the Rock!

Anime seriesComedy, Music12 episodes (Season 2 announced)Funny, Hype

Hitori Gotoh taught herself guitar in middle school because she decided being in a band was the one way someone like her could be noticed. She is very good, posts covers online under the name Guitarhero, and still has nobody to play with. Then a drummer named Nijika finds her alone in a park with her guitar case and needs a stand-in guitarist that same evening.

From Aki Hamazi's four-panel manga in Houbunsha's Manga Time Kirara Max. CloverWorks made the 12-episode series, which aired in Japan from October to December 2022.

Why It Isn't K-On!

Japanese readers keep asking how this differs from K-On!, and my answer is what the music is for. In K-On!, as Japanese fans describe it, the band decorates a happy school life. Hitori has nothing else: no friends, no standing in class, no other way to get anyone to look at her. That is where the heat in the performance scenes comes from.

Two details for anyone who knows Japanese rock. The four members are named after Asian Kung-Fu Generation, each matched to the same instrument as the real player. And in 2023 Shimokitazawa made Kessoku Band an official ambassador of the neighborhood, with a tie-in stamp rally at that year's Shimokitazawa Curry Festival.

2. K-On!

FormatGenreLengthEmotional tags
Anime seriesComedy, Music, Slice of life2 seasons (13 + 26 episodes)Wholesome, Funny

Yui Hirasawa starts high school with no hobby and no idea which club to join. The light music club is about to be shut down for lack of members, and the three girls trying to save it need a fourth. Yui signs up thinking light music sounds easy, then learns she will have to play the guitar.

From Kakifly's four-panel manga in Houbunsha's Manga Time Kirara. Kyoto Animation made both seasons: K-On! in 2009 and K-On!! (with two exclamation marks) in 2010.

The Show Everyone Is Measured Against

In Japan, K-On! is the yardstick. The band's first mini album, credited to the fictional Ho-kago Tea Time, debuted at No. 1 on Oricon's weekly album chart in 2009, the first album credited to anime characters to reach the top. Toyosato, a small town in Shiga whose old school building was the model for the girls' school, became a pilgrimage site.

But here's where I have to be honest: I have not watched it, and what Japanese fans describe loving is mostly not the music. It is the tea and cake in the club room, the slow afternoons, the band as a reason to spend high school together. If you want a band show where nothing terrible happens, this is the one the others get compared to.

3. Girls Band Cry

FormatGenreLengthEmotional tags
Anime seriesDrama, Music13 episodesHype, Moving

Nina Iseri drops out of high school, leaves Kumamoto, and moves by herself to Kawasaki, just outside Tokyo, planning to go to cram school and get into a university. In front of a station she hears Momoka, a guitarist who has quit her old band, singing alone. Before long Nina is fronting a new band instead of studying.

An original series from Toei Animation, made in 3D CG and aired in Japan from April to June 2024.

Why Kawasaki

Toei's producer picked Kawasaki on purpose. In an interview he said the city has a music scene, with street musicians and a City of Music banner at the station, and that the rent is cheap enough for a girl who has just left home to start a band. Tokyo's central wards did not feel right to him, and Yokohama seemed too glamorous for a rock band.

The band in the show, Togenashi Togeari, released music videos and its first single in 2023, a year before the anime aired. So in Japan the band came first and the story second, and the voice cast has kept performing as a real band.

4. BanG Dream! It's MyGO!!!!!

FormatGenreLengthEmotional tags
Anime seriesDrama, Music13 episodesBittersweet, Moving

Tomori Takamatsu's old band, Crychic, broke up, and she has not gotten over it. At Haneoka Girls' Academy, where girl bands are the thing to do, a transfer student named Anon, just back from studying in England, decides to start one and wants Tomori in it.

A spin-off of Bushiroad's BanG Dream! franchise, made by the CG studio Sanzigen and aired in Japan from June to September 2023.

A Band Built on a Breakup

MyGO!!!!! is also a real band: the voice cast plays live under the same name. Some of the songs were written and arranged by Daisuke Hasegawa, formerly the guitarist of the 2000s rock band Aqua Timez.

The premise is what sets it apart. Most band anime are about getting a group together; this one starts with a group that already fell apart, and asks whether the girls left behind can trust a band again.

5. BanG Dream! Ave Mujica

FormatGenreLengthEmotional tags
Anime seriesDrama, Psychological, Music13 episodesShocking, Dark

Sakiko Togawa, the girl who walked out of Crychic, has lost her family's comfortable life and now lives in poverty with her father. She builds a new band in which every member plays a masked character, and it performs in theaters rather than live houses.

The direct sequel to It's MyGO!!!!!, also from Bushiroad and Sanzigen, aired in Japan from January to March 2025. Watch MyGO first.

The Same Breakup, With the Lights Off

Director Kodai Kakimoto has said he set out to make Ave Mujica the opposite of MyGO. Where MyGO's members show their raw feelings in small clubs, these girls hide theirs behind masks on a stage. The staff borrowed from circuses, freak shows and theater to keep it from looking like BanG Dream!'s existing gothic band, Roselia.

Reviews were split. Some praised how it turns the usual band anime themes inside out; others complained that the band barely performs. Either way, it only works if you have seen MyGO.

6. NANA

FormatGenreLengthEmotional tags
Anime seriesDrama, Romance, Music47 episodesBittersweet, Heartbreaking

Two twenty-year-old women named Nana meet on the way to Tokyo and end up sharing an apartment. Nana Osaki sings in a punk band, Black Stones, and wants to make it. Nana Komatsu mostly wants to be loved. The band's rise, and a far more famous band called Trapnest, pull the two of them in different directions.

From Ai Yazawa's manga in Shueisha's Cookie. Madhouse made the 47-episode series, which aired on Nippon TV from April 2006 to March 2007.

The Story That Stopped

Know this going in: the story has no ending yet. Yazawa put the manga on hiatus in 2009 when she fell ill, and it has not resumed, so Japanese fans have been waiting on the two Nanas for more than fifteen years.

It is the oldest show on this list, and the one where the band is a career, with a record label, tabloid reporters and a manager. Yazawa, a fan of the brand, dressed her punk singer in Vivienne Westwood.

Ritsuka Uenoyama, a high school guitarist who has lost interest in playing, restrings a classmate's guitar. The classmate, a quiet boy named Mafuyu Sato, asks him to teach him. Then Ritsuka hears Mafuyu sing once and wants him in the band.

From Natsuki Kizu's manga. Lerche made the 11-episode series for Fuji TV's Noitamina block in 2019, billed as the first boys' love anime in that slot. A film followed in 2020.

A Guitar With a History

The guitar Mafuyu carries has a history he will not talk about, and the premise is how long it takes him to say it out loud. The band is where he finally does.

If you grew up on rock radio, check the episode titles: many are borrowed from rock songs, mostly by British bands. The songs the band plays in the show were written by Centimillimental, a real Japanese act.

Lilisa Suzunomiya gave up the guitar when her mother married a rich real estate tycoon, and now she lives as a proper young lady at an elite girls' school. Then she finds out that the school's most flawless student, Otoha Kurogane, secretly plays heavy metal drums.

From Hiroshi Fukuda's manga in Hakusensha's Young Animal. Bandai Namco Pictures made the series, which aired in Japan from April to June 2025.

BAND-MAID, in Motion Capture

The band in the show plays instrumental rock with no singer and is aiming for the Fuji Rock Festival. Its performances were played by members of BAND-MAID, a real Japanese hard rock band, who did motion capture and were filmed from several angles so the animators could copy their fingering.

Full disclosure: this one is on the list for its premise alone. Two girls at a school where everyone is polite all day, and the one place they are allowed to be rude is through an amplifier. That is a very Japanese kind of rebellion.

Yuu Haruna moves to Tokyo and spends more time on social media than talking to people. Soon after he arrives he collides with Fuuka Akitsuki, a girl who breaks his phone, and the two end up starting a band with classmates. Meanwhile, his childhood friend has become a famous idol.

From Kōji Seo's manga in Kodansha's Weekly Shōnen Magazine. Diomedéa made the 12-episode series, which aired in Japan from January to March 2017.

An Ellegarden Drummer in a Romance

The band's songs in the anime were played by Japanese rock musicians: SHO, guitarist of My First Story; Hirotaka Takahashi, drummer of Ellegarden; and T$UYO$HI, bassist of The BONEZ. For a romance series, that is a serious lineup.

The premise puts a love triangle at the center, and the band is what keeps the three of them in the same room.

Cyan, a girl who plays a rhythm game on her phone, gets pulled into the game's world, Midi City, and becomes the guitarist of a band called Plasmagica. Bands there fight it out in battles of the bands, and a villain named Dagger Morse is turning musicians into monsters.

Based on a mobile rhythm game made with Sanrio. Bones made the first season, which aired in Japan from April to June 2015, the first late-night anime from a Sanrio franchise.

Sanrio, Turned Up Loud

Yes, that Sanrio. The game was the company's first franchise aimed at an older audience, and its cast includes a visual-kei band, Shingan Crimsonz.

That band placed second in Sanrio's 30th annual character ranking in 2015, in the same poll as the company's classic mascots. It is also the only show on this list where the battle of the bands is an actual battle.

Where to Start, by the Service You Already Have

With Crunchyroll, start with Bocchi the Rock! and go on to Girls Band Cry. Then watch It's MyGO!!!!! and Ave Mujica back to back, in that order, because the second one picks up the same broken band from the other side.

With Hulu, NANA is included, and at 47 episodes it is the longest commitment here. With HIDIVE, you have K-On! and Rock Is a Lady's Modesty. Netflix and HBO Max subscribers can find two more, Carole & Tuesday and The Colors Within, in our list of the best music anime.

Pressed for time? Bocchi the Rock!, the one show here I can stand behind episode by episode. It is twelve episodes long, and by Episode 8 you will know whether band anime are for you.
