Gundam Watch Order: Main Timeline, Standalones, and What Streams in the US

Most Gundam series do not connect, so there is no single watch order. There is one main timeline, the Universal Century (the in-story calendar most Gundam shares), and for that you go in release order: Mobile Suit Gundam (1979), Zeta Gundam, Gundam ZZ, Char's Counterattack, Gundam Unicorn, then Hathaway and its sequels. Everything else is either a side story set inside that timeline or a standalone series you can start cold.

Gundam Wing premiered on Cartoon Network's Toonami block in March 2000 and quickly became Toonami's highest-rated show, so for a generation of Toonami viewers, Wing was the first Gundam. It has nothing to do with the main timeline. Japanese guides start from the 1979 series instead. I'll be upfront: I have not watched Gundam yet, so this page sticks to what can be checked: release dates, which shows connect to which, and what each US service carries this month.

Streaming was checked on October 15, 2026 in two sources, TMDB's US data and JustWatch's US listings. They agreed on every title except two: JustWatch had no separate page for SEED Freedom or for The Sorcery of Nymph Circe, so those rows rest on TMDB alone.

Steps 1 to 4: Amuro and Char

The 1979 series, created and directed by Yoshiyuki Tomino, sets up the war between the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon, and the rivalry between Amuro Ray and Char Aznable. Zeta and ZZ continue it directly, and Char's Counterattack, a 1988 film Tomino also wrote and directed, closes the Amuro and Char story. Each of the four assumes you saw the one before.

One US wrinkle: JustWatch lists Char's Counterattack only under the Crunchyroll channel sold inside Prime Video, a paid add-on, not in the regular Crunchyroll app. It is the one step in the main line you may have to pay extra for.

Steps 5 to 8: after Char

Unicorn is set in Universal Century 0096 as a sequel to Char's Counterattack, and Narrative picks up a year later. Unicorn first came out as seven long episodes from 2010 to 2014 and was later recut for TV as RE:0096; Hulu has the original seven. Hathaway adapts Tomino's own 1989 novel and is planned as a trilogy; the second film opened in Japan in January 2026, and both films so far are listed on Netflix in the US.

Two later chapters sit even further down the calendar: Gundam F91 (1991) and Victory Gundam (1993) take place long after Hathaway. F91 can only be bought in the US, and Victory is not streaming at all.

Two Things That Trip People Up

🧭 Side Stories in the Same Timeline

These fill in corners of the main story. All of them are set around the 1979 war, so the rule is simple: watch them any time after the original series.

Episode 15 of the 1979 series was outsourced while Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, the show's character designer and animation director, was in the hospital, and in 2022 Yasuhiko came back to direct it as a full film. Requiem for Vengeance is the newest: six episodes made entirely in Unreal Engine 5, released worldwide on Netflix in October 2024.

SEED is the one sequence in this group: SEED, then SEED Destiny, then the 2024 film SEED Freedom. The Witch from Mercury, which aired from 2022 to 2023, was the first TV Gundam with a female lead, and GQuuuuuuX, the shortest TV series in the franchise at 12 episodes, followed it with another. GQuuuuuuX is also a co-production with Studio Khara, the studio behind the Rebuild films covered in our Evangelion watch order.

Turn A Gundam, Reconguista in G, Victory Gundam, War in the Pocket and Stardust Memory showed no US streaming in either source.

🧩 Gunpla: the Business Behind Four Decades of New Series

The shows are only half of it. Bandai started selling Gundam plastic model kits, known as Gunpla, in 1980, and by September 2024 cumulative shipments had passed 800 million units. That is the business behind a franchise that keeps opening new standalone worlds alongside the old timeline: every new series means new kits.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Can I skip the 1979 series?

Yes, unless you want the main timeline. Every standalone series, from G Gundam to GQuuuuuuX, starts from zero.

Is Gundam Wing part of the main timeline?

No. Wing is a standalone series with its own calendar. Nothing in the Universal Century depends on it.

What is the shortest way into Gundam?

GQuuuuuuX, at 12 episodes on Prime Video, or The Witch from Mercury, at 24 episodes on Crunchyroll. The main timeline has no short version on US streaming: the 1979 series is 43 episodes.

Which service has the most Gundam in the US?

Crunchyroll, which has most of the main timeline plus several standalone series. Hulu is second, with Unicorn and two side stories, and Netflix has Hathaway. Five titles are not streaming anywhere in the US right now.

📝 Final Thoughts

Main timeline: the 1979 series on Crunchyroll, then release order to Hathaway. Everything else: whichever standalone series is on the service you already pay for. None of them connects to the main timeline, so there is nothing to spoil.
