A cat in a Western story is a pet. A cat in a Japanese story is usually something else wearing a cat: a household spirit, a debt collector, a dead relative, a beckoning figure in a shop window that is there for the money. The country has waving cats on tills, shrines where people pray for sick pets, islands where the cats outnumber the residents, and a folklore tradition in which a cat that lives long enough grows a second tail and stops being a cat.
That ambiguity is why cat anime is a deeper shelf than it sounds. The first seven titles here are about cats. The last three are built around a single cat who turns out to be running the plot. Six are on Crunchyroll, two on HBO Max, two on Netflix, and the status for each is at the end of its entry.

1. Chi's Sweet Home
| Format | Genre | Length | Emotional tags |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anime series | Comedy, Family | 208 short episodes | Warm, Silly |
A kitten wanders away from her mother, gets lost in a park, and is picked up by a small boy whose apartment block does not allow pets. The family hides her. She does not understand that she is being hidden, which is most of the problem.
Two hundred and eight episodes, each about three minutes, adapted from Kanata Konami's manga. The story is narrated from the kitten's point of view, in the kitten's vocabulary.
The Most Accurate Cat in Animation
What separates this from every other cute-animal show is observation. Chi does not behave like a small person. She misjudges a jump and pretends it was deliberate. She attacks a foot under a blanket and then forgets why. She is frightened of the vet in the specific way cats are frightened, which is silent and total.
The apartment-rules plot is also more Japanese than it looks. Pet restrictions in rental housing here are strict and enforced, and the family's low-grade anxiety about a neighbour noticing is a real anxiety. The show plays it for comedy without pretending it is not a problem.

2. My Roommate is a Cat
| Format | Genre | Length | Emotional tags |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anime series | Drama, Comedy | 12 episodes | Tender, Melancholy |
A withdrawn novelist who lost his parents takes in a stray to use as research material for a book about pets. He is bad at people, bad at cats, and worse at admitting he needs either. The cat has been feeding a litter of siblings behind a convenience store.
Aired in 2019. Every episode plays events from the man's perspective and then rewinds and plays them again from the cat's, which sounds like a gimmick for about one episode.
The Rewind Is the Whole Show
The structure does something specific. You watch a man fail to understand an animal, feel superior, and then discover that the animal had a coherent reason for everything and was also failing to understand him. It is the cleanest illustration of mutual incomprehension I have seen in a series about anything.
Underneath it is a grief story, and the show is patient about it. He is a writer who cannot leave the house, in a country where that particular withdrawal has a name and a fair amount of shame attached. The cat is not a cure. The cat is a reason to buy food, which turns out to be enough to start with.

3. She & Her Cat: Everything Flows
| Format | Genre | Length | Emotional tags |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anime series | Drama | 4 short episodes | Quiet, Aching |
A young woman living alone in Tokyo is having a bad year: a job that is not working, a relationship ending, a mother she is avoiding. Her cat narrates. He does not know what any of it means and describes it with total confidence anyway.
Four short episodes from 2016, expanding the five-minute black-and-white short Makoto Shinkai made by himself in 1999 before he directed anything else.
The Narration Does the Damage
The cat's voice is calm, fond, and completely wrong about what is happening, which is how the show gets past your defences. He reports that she stayed in bed all day and that this was nice because he could stay too. You are two steps ahead of him and there is nothing you can do with that information.
It is about forty minutes in total. I put it on expecting a pleasant thing to have running and had to stop halfway through. Consider yourself warned, and do not save it for a bad week.

4. The Cat Returns
| Format | Genre | Length | Emotional tags |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anime film | Fantasy, Adventure, Family | 75 min | Breezy, Playful |
A distracted teenager saves a cat from traffic. The cat stands up, thanks her politely, and that night a royal procession arrives at her house to repay the debt. The repayment involves moving to the Cat Kingdom permanently as the prince's bride, which nobody thought to ask her about.
Studio Ghibli, 2002, directed by Hiroyuki Morita. It grew out of a cat character from Whisper of the Heart, and it runs seventy-five minutes flat.
Ghibli With the Solemnity Switched Off
This is the Ghibli film people forget exists, and the reason is that it has no interest in being important. There is no ecological message, no war, no grandmother dispensing wisdom. There is a cat baron in a waistcoat, a very fat white cat, and a set-piece in which a girl slowly turns into a cat while attending a banquet she did not agree to.
The debt-repayment premise is a joke that lands harder here. Japanese social obligation runs on returning favours at the correct size, and the film's entire crisis is a favour returned catastrophically too generously by someone who will not take no for an answer. Every adult in Japan has met that person.

5. A Whisker Away
| Format | Genre | Length | Emotional tags |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anime film | Fantasy, Romance, Drama | 104 min | Yearning, Bittersweet |
A relentlessly cheerful middle-schooler is in love with a boy who finds her exhausting. She has a mask that turns her into a cat, and as a cat she can sit on his lap and be told things he tells nobody. The mask seller is happy to make the arrangement permanent.
A Netflix original from 2020. The cheerfulness is a performance covering a family situation the film takes its time revealing.
The Bargain Is the Point
The premise sounds like a soft romance and the middle act is closer to horror. What she is actually being offered is the chance to stop being a person with problems by becoming a creature that is loved unconditionally and understood not at all. The film is clear-eyed that this is a real temptation and not a silly one.
It gets loud in the last twenty minutes in a way I could have done without. But the quiet stretch before that, where she sits on the boy's lap and listens to him describe a girl he cannot stand, is one of the better pieces of teenage misery in recent anime.

6. Nyaight of the Living Cat
| Format | Genre | Length | Emotional tags |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anime series | Comedy, Horror | 12 episodes | Frantic, Absurd |
A virus has spread worldwide with one symptom: any human who touches a cat turns into a cat. Cats are everywhere, they are affectionate, and they are actively trying to be petted. The survivors have to cross a country full of the cutest possible threat without giving in.
Aired in 2025. The joke is that every survival-horror instinct you have is exactly wrong, because the monsters are adorable and want to rub against your leg.
A Zombie Parody That Actually Works
Most zombie parodies run out after the premise. This one keeps finding new problems, because the infected are not hostile, they are loving, and the tension comes from a character's own hands rather than from anything attacking them. A cat rolling over and showing its belly is, in this show, a gun to the head.
It is also the newest thing on this list, which matters if you have already worked through the classics. The animation is better than the concept deserves, and the moment a survivor breaks and decides being a cat is fine is played straight enough to sting.

7. Natsume's Book of Friends
| Format | Genre | Length | Emotional tags |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anime series | Drama, Fantasy | 86 episodes | Gentle, Sorrowful |
A boy who can see spirits inherits a book in which his grandmother recorded the names of every yokai she defeated. Each name is a contract. He decides to return them, one at a time, to creatures who mostly expected to be enslaved rather than released.
Seven seasons from 2008 onward. His self-appointed bodyguard is a powerful spirit currently sealed inside a fat ceramic beckoning cat, which he resents and refuses to leave.
Why the Cat Is Shaped Like That
Nyanko-sensei is a maneki-neko, the beckoning cat that sits by the till in every Japanese shop, and the show gets a lot of quiet comedy out of a genuinely dangerous spirit being trapped in the shape of a souvenir. He drinks, he complains, he is transparently fond of the boy and will not say so.
The series itself is one of the best things Japan makes and hardly anyone abroad watches it, because eighty-six episodes of gentle short stories is a difficult sell. Start anywhere in season one. Each episode resolves. Most of them are about someone being let go.

8. Whisper of the Heart
| Format | Genre | Length | Emotional tags |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anime film | Romance, Drama, Family | 111 min | Warm, Restless |
A fourteen-year-old who reads constantly notices a fat cat riding her train like a passenger. She gets off where it gets off, follows it uphill through a suburb she has never explored, and finds an antique shop with a cat statue in a waistcoat in the window.
Studio Ghibli, 1995, directed by Yoshifumi Kondo from a Miyazaki screenplay. The cat is called Moon by one family and something else by three others.
A Cat as a Plot Device, Done Properly
The joke the film makes about Moon is that he has four names and four owners and belongs to nobody, which every neighbourhood in Japan has a version of. He is not magical. He simply goes where he wants, and the story only happens because a girl decides to follow an animal instead of going home.
The rest is the best film Ghibli made about the fear of not being good enough at the thing you want to do. She writes something, knows it is weak, and an old man tells her that raw stone has to be cut before anyone can see what is in it. I would hand this to any fourteen-year-old who has started making things.

9. Fruits Basket
| Format | Genre | Length | Emotional tags |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anime series | Drama, Romance, Fantasy | 63 episodes | Devastating, Healing |
An orphaned girl living in a tent is taken in by a family cursed to transform into zodiac animals when hugged by the opposite sex. Twelve of them have a place in the zodiac. One of them is the Cat, who was tricked out of his place in the old story and is treated accordingly.
The 2019 remake runs sixty-three episodes and adapts the manga to its end, which the 2001 version did not.
The Folk Tale the Whole Series Is Built On
Every Japanese child learns why there is no cat in the zodiac. The rat lied to the cat about the day of the banquet, the cat overslept, and that is why cats chase rats. It is told as a funny story. Fruits Basket takes it seriously and asks what it does to a person to be the one the story excludes on purpose, and the answer takes sixty-three episodes.
This is the heaviest thing on the list by a distance. It looks like a high school romance for about six episodes. Then it becomes a study of family abuse that I have seen people put down and come back to years later. The Cat is why it works.

10. Sailor Moon
| Format | Genre | Length | Emotional tags |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anime series | Action, Fantasy, Romance | 200 episodes | Nostalgic, Bright |
A lazy, weeping, generally hopeless fourteen-year-old is stopped in the street by a black cat with a crescent moon on its forehead who informs her that she is a soldier of justice. The cat provides the equipment, the briefings, the recruitment of the rest of the team, and most of the strategy.
Two hundred episodes from 1992. Luna is joined later by Artemis, a white cat performing the same function for a different heroine.
The Cats Are the Adults
Watch it as a grown-up and the structure is clear: the heroines are children who are frightened and bad at this, and the cats are the only competent authority in the show. Luna scolds, plans, withholds information for good reasons, and is the one who remembers what everybody has forgotten. She is a handler, not a mascot.
It is also the reason a generation of Japanese girls wanted a black cat. Thirty years on, the shape of the thing has aged surprisingly well, though two hundred episodes is a commitment and the first season is where the cats get the most to do.

If you live with a dog rather than a cat, there is a companion list of the best dog anime, from Cowboy Bebop's corgi to the giant white dog in Gintama.
Where to Start
Start with Chi's Sweet Home if you have ever owned a kitten, because it is the only animated thing I have seen that gets the behaviour exactly right. Episodes are three minutes long. Nothing happens. A cat discovers a curtain. It is the correct thing to put on when you have no capacity left for plot.
Start with The Cat Returns if you want a proper film, and know going in that it began as a joke. Studio Ghibli made it partly as a spin-off of the antique-shop cat in Whisper of the Heart, it runs seventy-five minutes, and it is the least self-serious thing in the Ghibli catalogue. A cat kingdom tries to make a schoolgirl marry a prince. That is the whole film and it is a good time.
One thing worth knowing if you are watching these from outside Japan. The word bakeneko keeps coming up, and it does not mean a magical cat in the friendly sense. It is a cat that has lived too long and changed, and the traditional stories about them are horror. Natsume's Book of Friends and Nyaight of the Living Cat are both drawing on that, in opposite directions, and the ambivalence in those shows is not tonal confusion. It is the actual folklore.
