Watch Monogatari in the order it aired: Bakemonogatari (2009) first, Off & Monster Season (2024) last. That is the order the anime was built to be seen in, and in the US the TV entries stream on Crunchyroll. The one gap is the Kizumonogatari film trilogy, which is rent or buy only, but Crunchyroll has Kizumonogatari: Koyomi Vamp, a 2024 film that recuts all three into one. Put it where the trilogy goes.
The series follows Koyomi Araragi, a high school senior who was briefly a vampire over spring break, and the girls he helps with oddities, supernatural afflictions that stand in for something each of them is going through. It comes from Nisio Isin's light novels, published by Kodansha since 2006, and the studio Shaft has made every anime entry, with Akiyuki Shinbo as director or chief director. The confusing part is the naming: the anime skipped around the novels, and some entries with "Season" in the title are not seasons in the usual sense. I have watched Bakemonogatari, so this page does not rank the later entries. It lists them: release date, episode count, what each one covers, and the US service that carries it as of this month.

Checked on October 18, 2026 against TMDB and JustWatch (US). Some entries also show up under the Crunchyroll channel on Prime Video; that is the same catalog sold as a paid add-on, not a second service. JustWatch does not break the listing down entry by entry, so check the episode lineup inside Crunchyroll's Monogatari page.
A few entries aired in an unusual way, which is why they get missed. Bakemonogatari ran 12 episodes on TV in 2009, and its last three came out online through June 2010. Nekomonogatari: Black aired as a four-episode marathon on New Year's Eve 2012, and Tsukimonogatari did the same two years later. On Crunchyroll, look for all of them inside the one Monogatari listing rather than as separate shows.
🧛 Where Kizumonogatari Fits
Kizumonogatari is the prequel: it tells what happened over the spring break that Bakemonogatari keeps referring to, when Koyomi met the vampire who became Shinobu. The novel came out in May 2008, after Bakemonogatari and before Nisemonogatari. The film was first planned for 2012, but that April it was postponed, and it finally arrived as three films from January 2016 to January 2017, which is why release order puts it after Owarimonogatari.
That leaves two good places for it. Release order, after Owarimonogatari, is the default. If you want Shinobu's story early, watching it right after Bakemonogatari is also fine; that is where it sits in the novels. Either way, pick one version: the three films or Koyomi Vamp. They tell the same story.
The Season Names, Untangled
- Monogatari Series Second Season (2013) is one 23-episode block covering five arcs: Nekomonogatari: White, Kabukimonogatari, Otorimonogatari, Onimonogatari and Koimonogatari.
- Hanamonogatari belongs to that same block in the novels, but it was split off and, after a delay, aired as its own five-episode marathon on August 16, 2014.
- Tsukimonogatari, Owarimonogatari, Koyomimonogatari, Owarimonogatari Second Season and Zoku Owarimonogatari together make up what the franchise calls the Final Season.
- The Final Season was not the end. Off & Monster Season (2024) continues the story after Zoku Owarimonogatari, and the franchise has announced more anime.
⏱ How Far to Go on a First Run
| Time you have | Watch | Why stop there |
|---|---|---|

| A few weeks | Through Hanamonogatari (#5) | Closes the second batch of novels; the Final Season starts with Tsukimonogatari |
| The whole thing | Through Off & Monster Season | 113 episodes, counting Koyomimonogatari's short ones, plus the Kizumonogatari film |
❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need Kizumonogatari before Nisemonogatari?
No. Nisemonogatari aired in 2012, four years before the Kizumonogatari films, and it was made for viewers who had only seen Bakemonogatari.
What is the chronological order?
The main story's timeline begins with Kizumonogatari over spring break, then Nekomonogatari: Black during Golden Week, then Bakemonogatari. After that the entries jump around in time. It is a rewatch order; on a first run it gives away some of what the later seasons reveal.
What is Kizumonogatari: Koyomi Vamp?
A 2024 film that recuts the three Kizumonogatari films into one. Crunchyroll gave it a one-day US theatrical release in August 2024, and it now streams on Crunchyroll.
Is Monogatari on Netflix in the US?
Not as of October 18, 2026. Crunchyroll is where the series streams in the US.
Is Off & Monster Season the last one?
Not yet. It continues past the Final Season, and the franchise has announced more anime.
📝 Final Thoughts
If you are not sure Monogatari is for you, Bakemonogatari answers that within its first arc: the show is mostly people talking, framed in Shaft's flat, typographic style, and the dialogue is the point. If that works for you, go down the table. By the end you will have seen every entry, in the order it reached viewers in Japan.
