Ghost in the Shell has no single watch order, because it has been retold from scratch five times. Start with the 1995 film, which is free with ads on Tubi in the US. After that, pick one line and watch it in release order: the film sequel Innocence, the Stand Alone Complex TV series, the Arise prequel, or the 2026 series. The fifth version, the 2017 Hollywood remake, stands apart from all of them. None of the lines needs the others.
All five go back to the same manga, Masamune Shirow's Ghost in the Shell, serialized in 1989 and 1990 and collected as a book in 1991: Major Motoko Kusanagi, a nearly full-body cyborg, and Public Security Section 9, a small unit that handles cybercrime and terrorism. Innocence is the only direct sequel to the 1995 film, and it was the first anime to compete for the Palme d'Or at Cannes, in 2004. It is not on any US streaming service, so for now it means buying the disc. You will also see Ghost in the Shell 2.0 (2008). That is not a sequel: it is the 1995 film re-edited with new CG, and it is free on Tubi, Plex and Kanopy. Watch the 1995 cut first.

Kenji Kamiyama wrote and directed the first two seasons at Production I.G, with music by Yoko Kanno. Season 1 follows Section 9's hunt for a hacker called the Laughing Man, and 2nd GIG follows a terrorist group called the Individual Eleven. Solid State Society is set two years after 2nd GIG, and SAC_2045 picks up eleven years after that, co-directed by Kamiyama and Shinji Aramaki in full 3DCG and released worldwide on Netflix.
The one gap for US viewers is Solid State Society, which is rent or buy only. SAC_2045 opens a new case, so going from 2nd GIG straight to it is a workable route.
Recap Films You Can Skip
- The Laughing Man (2005) and Individual Eleven (2006) cut the main story of each TV season down to a film of about 160 minutes. Both are listed free with ads on Tubi. Watch the series or the recap, not both.

Arise was directed by Kazuchika Kise, written by Tow Ubukata and scored by Cornelius, and it shows the Major before Section 9 exists. Alternative Architecture is the more compact route in: it covers the four Border films and adds two new episodes that lead into The New Movie. Those two were later sold on their own as a fifth part, Pyrophoric Cult. Choose either the Alternative Architecture TV cut or the four Borders, then finish with The New Movie.
