Comedy is the hardest thing to recommend across a language barrier. Half of what makes a joke work in Japanese is timing, dialect, and the specific way someone breaks politeness rules that a subtitle cannot carry. I have watched foreign friends sit stone-faced through something that had me wheezing.
So this list is filtered for that. These ten are shows I have actually seen land with people who do not speak Japanese, either because the comedy is physical, or because the translation teams did heroic work. Streaming info for the US is included with each.

Two of these are technically action shows and one is a survival story about science. Comedy anime rarely stays in its lane, which is usually a good sign.
1. SPY x FAMILY

A master spy needs a family for a mission, so he adopts a child and arranges a marriage of convenience. He does not know his new wife is a contract killer. Neither of them knows their daughter reads minds. She knows everything and finds it all extremely entertaining.
The mission requires getting the child into an elite school, which turns out to be harder than international espionage.
Why It Is Funny
Anya carries this show. A six-year-old who knows exactly what every adult around her is thinking, and who consistently draws the wrong conclusion, is a comedy engine that never runs out of fuel. Her face during the entrance interview is a reaction image in Japan for a reason.
What keeps it from being one joke is that the fake family keeps accidentally functioning. Loid runs surveillance on his own household while genuinely worrying about parents' day. The show never announces that these three have become real to each other, it just quietly stops being a lie.

Every human on Earth turns to stone. Thousands of years later, a teenage science obsessive wakes up in a world reclaimed by forest and decides to rebuild the entire technological history of humanity from scratch, starting with soap.
He is aided by a man whose primary skill is being enormously strong and enthusiastic about everything.
Why It Is Funny
I almost skipped this one. A shonen series about chemistry sounded like homework with a soundtrack.
It is closer to an infomercial hosted by a maniac. Senku explains genuine chemistry while cackling, Chrome reacts to sulfuric acid like it is a magic trick, and the show plays scientific progress as pure spectacle. The comedy comes from the gap between what these characters are doing and how seriously they take it. My favourite running gag is that the strongest man alive keeps being assigned to stir things.

3. Bocchi the Rock!

Hitori practises guitar six hours a day in her closet, uploads videos anonymously, and has never spoken to a classmate. A drummer finds her hiding in a bush and drags her into a band.
The rest is her attempting to become a functional person on stage, mostly unsuccessfully.
Why It Is Funny
The visual language is what makes this. When Bocchi panics, the show abandons its style entirely: claymation, live-action footage, oil painting, a dissolving puddle of pink. There must be forty distinct animation gags across twelve episodes.
But here is where I have to be honest. If you have ever been the person rehearsing a two-sentence self-introduction for an hour, some of this is uncomfortable rather than funny. That accuracy is why it became a phenomenon in Japan. The live performances, when they finally arrive, are treated with total sincerity, and they earn it.

4. One-Punch Man

Saitama trained until he went bald and can now end any fight with a single punch. This has destroyed his ability to enjoy anything. He worries about supermarket sales and his hero ranking while civilisation-ending monsters die instantly off-screen.
Season one, animated by Madhouse, remains one of the best-looking action shows ever made.
Why It Is Funny
This is not a parody of superhero stories. It is a workplace comedy about a man whose job stopped being interesting, and the fights just happen to be spectacular.
The joke structure is identical every time and never gets old: a villain delivers an enormous speech, the animation goes berserk, and then nothing. Saitama's flat expression against the most expensive animation on television is the whole gag. Genos exists to take everything seriously so Saitama does not have to.

5. Kaguya-sama: Love is War -Ultra Romantic-

The student council president and vice president are in love. Both have decided that confessing first would be a humiliating defeat. They spend every day constructing elaborate psychological traps to force the other into admitting it.
Season three is where the strategy finally collapses.
Why It Is Funny
The show treats teenage romance as military intelligence, complete with a narrator screaming about tactical victories over what is essentially an offer to share an umbrella. Watching two brilliant people be catastrophically stupid about feelings is a bottomless well.
Season three earns a place here rather than season one because it does something rare: it lets the joke resolve. The culture festival arc goes for broke, and the moment the premise finally breaks is somehow both the funniest and most sincere the series has ever been. Japanese fans still post about that ending.

6. Toradora!

Ryuji looks like a delinquent and is actually a compulsive cleaner. Taiga is tiny, violent, and known as the Palmtop Tiger. They discover they have crushes on each other's best friends and form an alliance.
You can see where this is going. So can they, eventually, about twenty episodes late.
Why It Is Funny
The comedy is almost entirely physical for the first half. Taiga attacking someone with a wooden sword over a misunderstanding, Ryuji cleaning a room in visible distress. It moves fast and it is genuinely funny.
It did not hit me until the second half, on rewatch. Every joke in the early episodes is establishing how these characters avoid saying anything true. When that starts costing them, the show turns without ever losing its sense of humour. Fifteen years old and still the benchmark for this genre in Japan.

7. Assassination Classroom

A yellow tentacled creature destroys most of the moon and announces it will do the same to Earth in a year. Its one condition: it wants to teach the worst class at an elite junior high school. The government gives the students weapons and a deadline.
The creature turns out to be an exceptional teacher.
Why It Is Funny
How do you build a comedy on a premise where every student is trying to murder the protagonist? By making him unbelievably good at his job. Koro-sensei dodges bullets at Mach 20 while grading papers, and he takes each assassination attempt as a teaching opportunity.
The Japanese school system's obsession with ranking sits underneath all of it, and the show is angrier about that than it first appears. The class is called End Class because they are the school's designated failures. Watching a creature from space treat them as worth teaching is the joke and the point at once.

8. Golden Kamuy

A veteran of the Russo-Japanese War teams up with a young Ainu woman to find gold hidden by a murderer, using tattoos on escaped convicts as a map. Competing for it are a deranged army lieutenant and the remnants of a samurai rebellion.
It is violent, historically detailed, and completely unable to stay serious for more than six minutes.
Why It Is Funny
Every character in this show is a lunatic in a different direction, and the series treats that as a documentary fact rather than a joke it needs to sell. A man will deliver a genuinely moving speech about survival and then be immediately humiliated by a squirrel.
The food is the running gag that became famous in Japan. Asirpa teaches Sugimoto to eat traditional Ainu dishes, he insists on adding miso, she is convinced miso is faeces. This happens constantly across four seasons. It should not still be funny. It is.

9. Gintama

Aliens conquer Japan at the end of the samurai era. Guns replace swords, the shogunate becomes a puppet, and a former rebel now runs a freelance odd-jobs business, mostly badly, mostly for food money.
It is a parody series, an action series, and occasionally a very serious drama about defeated people. Often in the same episode.
Why It Is Funny
Yes, the humour is crude. Yes, roughly forty percent of the jokes reference other manga, Japanese television, or things happening in the industry that week. And yes, it is 367 episodes.
None of that matters once it clicks. Gintama's specialty is spending twenty minutes on the stupidest possible bit and then, without warning, delivering a fight scene that makes you put your drink down. It has been running since 2006 because Japanese readers have never found anything else that does both. Start at episode 1 and give it twelve.

10. Lycoris Recoil

Teenage girls in school uniforms secretly maintain public order in Tokyo through targeted violence. Chisato, the most gifted of them, refuses to kill anyone. She works out of a cafe with a rigidly professional partner who finds her infuriating.
The gunfights are excellent. The cafe is the actual show.
Why It Is Funny
The comedy here is entirely tonal whiplash. A tense standoff resolves with Chisato disarming three men without breaking a parfait, then immediately negotiating for a day off. Takina's total inability to handle customer service is a joke the show returns to weekly.
It became the most-discussed anime of its season in Japan largely on the strength of the two leads simply hanging out. Underneath, there is a real argument about whether a system that uses children to keep the peace can be called peace. The show is smarter than its premise, and much funnier than it needs to be.

Final Thoughts
The pattern I keep noticing: the funniest anime are almost never comedies first. Spy x Family is a spy thriller. Golden Kamuy is a treasure hunt with real violence. One-Punch Man is a superhero story that happens to have a bored protagonist. The jokes work because the show commits fully to something else and then lets characters be ridiculous inside it.
If you want the highest joke-per-minute rate, start with Gintama, but know that it takes a dozen episodes to find its footing. If you want something that will make you laugh within four minutes and then quietly wreck you by the finale, Bocchi the Rock is twelve episodes and nearly perfect.
One warning from experience: do not start Kaguya-sama on a night when you have work in the morning. The episodes are twenty minutes and they disappear.
