The short answer: Naruto (220 episodes), then Naruto Shippuden (500), then Boruto (293), with The Last: Naruto the Movie slotted in after Shippuden episode 493. Hulu and Crunchyroll each carry all three TV series in the US, so one subscription covers the whole TV story. Netflix has only the first series.
Two things shape the plan more than the order does. One is length: Naruto and Shippuden together run 720 episodes, and about two in five are filler, episodes made for the anime that are not in Masashi Kishimoto's manga. The other is where the films sit. Eight are on Netflix, while the three whose stories Kishimoto supplied are on no subscription service; all three are free with ads on The Roku Channel.

| Boruto: Naruto the Movie | 2015 | Boruto, or skip it (see below) | free with ads on The Roku Channel |
The first eight films are side stories, and the TV series never refers back to any of them, so you can watch them in any order once you are into the series they belong to, or leave them out.
The last three are different, because Kishimoto supplied their stories. Road to Ninja was the first film he worked on directly, and it drops Naruto into a version of the village where his parents are alive. The Last is part of the main story: it shows how Naruto and Hinata end up together, and most guides place it between Shippuden episodes 493 and 494, before the wedding episodes that close the series. Boruto: Naruto the Movie covers the same Chūnin Exams that Boruto episodes 53 to 66 retell, so if you watch the series you can skip the film.
I have watched Naruto and Shippuden; Boruto and the films I know from their listings and credits, so this table is about placement rather than about which films are good.
🧭 Three Ways Through, Depending on What You Subscribe To
| Route | Watch | Services you need |
|---|---|---|
| One subscription | Naruto 1–220, Shippuden 1–493, The Last, Shippuden 494–500, Boruto | Hulu or Crunchyroll, plus The Roku Channel (free) for The Last |
| Netflix first | Naruto and the three Naruto-era films on Netflix; Shippuden on Hulu or Crunchyroll, with the five Shippuden-era films back on Netflix | Netflix, then Hulu or Crunchyroll |
| Manga story only | The same order with the filler taken out (see the next section) | Hulu or Crunchyroll |
Netflix ends where the first series ends: episode 220, in which Naruto leaves the village to train. Everything after that is on Hulu or Crunchyroll.
✂️ How Much of Naruto Is Filler
Filler, Counted by Anime Filler List
- Naruto: 90 of 220 episodes are filler (41%). Most of it is one block: from episode 136 to 219, every episode is filler except 141 and 142, which mix filler with manga material. Episode 220, the last, sets up Shippuden and is worth keeping.
- Naruto Shippuden: 203 of 500 episodes are filler (41%), spread through the series in shorter arcs rather than one long stretch.
- Taking the filler out leaves 130 episodes of Naruto and 297 of Shippuden, 427 in all instead of 720.
- Episodes that mix filler with manga material are counted as story above. Some of them add a scene or two that the manga does not have, but skipping them would cut out manga chapters too.
❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Is Naruto Shippuden on Netflix in the US?
Shippuden streams on Hulu and Crunchyroll in the US, not on Netflix. What Netflix does carry is the first series and eight of the films.
Where can I watch The Last: Naruto the Movie?
On The Roku Channel, free with ads. It was not on Netflix, Hulu, Crunchyroll or Prime Video when this was checked, though it can be rented or bought digitally.
Can I skip all the filler?
Yes. The stretch from episode 136 to 219 of the first series is the safest cut, because nothing there carries into Shippuden. In Shippuden the filler comes in short arcs, so a filler list helps more there than a single cutoff.
Do I have to watch Boruto?
No. Naruto's own story ends with Shippuden episode 500, and Boruto follows his son. Start it if you want to see the next generation of the village, with Naruto as Hokage.
Is Boruto finished?
Part 1 is. It ended with episode 293 in March 2023. The manga continues as Boruto: Two Blue Vortex, and an anime of it has been announced without a premiere date as of October 21, 2026.
📝 Final Thoughts
Episode 135 is the natural checkpoint. It closes the arc in which Sasuke leaves the village, and everything up to it is the manga's story; past it comes the long filler block, then Naruto's departure in episode 220 and the time skip into Shippuden. Decide there whether you want the filler, and pick Hulu or Crunchyroll before Shippuden starts, since that is where Netflix stops.
