Japanese Dating Shows and Reality TV: 10 to Stream on Netflix and Prime

Japanese reality TV usually comes with a second show stacked on top of it. While the cast lives its life on screen, a panel of comedians and celebrities sits in a studio, watching the same footage and reacting to it, and their running commentary is cut into the episode. In Japan this is so normal that a dating show without a studio feels unfinished.

Six of the ten below are dating or house-share shows, and the other four are comedy, game and cooking shows, including two that Americans may already know from cable TV in another form. All ten are on Netflix or Prime Video in the US.

I have to be upfront about one gap. The Japanese dating shows I know best, The Bachelor Japan and The Bachelorette Japan, are not here at all, because I could not find them on Prime Video in the US. Of the dating shows that are, Love Village is the one I have watched as a series, and Terrace House I know from Closing Door, the 2015 film that wrapped up its original run on Japanese TV, not from the Netflix series. The rest I have not seen, and their entries describe the rules, the hosts and where to watch, nothing more.

1. Terrace House

FormatGenreLengthEmotional tags
Reality seriesReality, House share, RomanceFour series on Netflix (2015 to 2020)Calm, Bittersweet

Six young men and women who have never met move into a stylish house. They keep their jobs and their schools, and there is no prize, no host and no elimination. When someone leaves, a new person moves in. The studio panel described at the top of this page is this show's: comedians and actors, cut in between scenes.

The show began on Fuji TV in 2012. Netflix co-produced four series: Boys & Girls in the City (Tokyo), Aloha State (Hawaii), Opening New Doors (Karuizawa, in the mountains) and Tokyo 2019-2020. Each series stands on its own.

Ordinary on Purpose

I have seen Closing Door, the 2015 film that ended the show's first run, and what stayed with me was how ordinary it all is. People go to work, cook dinner, and slowly work up the courage to ask someone out, and the film never pushes them faster than that.

The show did not get a planned ending. Production stopped in 2020 after the death of Hana Kimura, a cast member of Tokyo 2019-2020 who had been the target of intense online abuse. In Japan her death led to calls for tougher penalties for online insults, and the law was changed in 2022.

2. Love Village

FormatGenreLengthEmotional tags
Reality seriesReality, Dating3 seasons (2023 to present)Warm, Funny

Singles between roughly 35 and 60 move into an old house in the countryside, fix it up together and live off what they can grow. When someone thinks they have found the one, they ring a pink bell and confess in front of everyone. If the feelings are not returned, they leave the village that day.

The Japanese title is Ai no Sato. Comedian Atsushi Tamura and TV personality Becky host it from the studio. The second season, in 2024, moved the house to Okinawa, and a third began in October 2026.

Dating Without the Games

Love Village surprised me. There is very little of the strategy you see in dating shows with younger casts. People talk about divorces, about caring for parents, about being afraid of growing old alone, and then they go back to weeding the garden together.

One thing to know before you start: each season runs about twenty episodes, and people arrive and leave all the way through, so there is no single couple to follow. It was billed as the first Japanese reality show built around people in that age range looking for love.

Singles talk to each other through a wall in separate pods, and they can only meet face to face after one of them proposes. The engaged couples then move in together and decide whether to go through with the wedding.

The Japanese version of the Netflix format, released in February 2022 and hosted by comedian Takashi Fujii and actress Yuka Itaya.

The Same Format, a Different Country

If you have watched the American seasons, the rules will feel familiar: the pods, the proposal before the first look, the weeks living together before the wedding day. The cast, the hosts and the families are Japanese, and so are the questions about marriage that come with them.

It is a single season, which makes it an easy one to finish in a weekend.

4. The Boyfriend

Nine men move into a house called the Green Room in Tateyama, a seaside town in Chiba. Each day, one of them runs a coffee truck and picks another to work it with him, and that is where most of the conversations happen.

It premiered on Netflix in July 2024, and a second season, set in Hokkaido, followed in January 2026. A studio panel chaired by actress and producer Megumi comments on each episode.

Japan's First Same-Sex Dating Show

It got attention in Japan for that reason alone. The panel includes Yoshimi Tokui, a comedian who also sat on the Terrace House panel, so the studio side runs the way Terrace House viewers will expect.

The coffee truck is the structure: two people, a small space and customers to serve, which keeps every pairing busy with something other than each other.

Ten Japanese singles are dropped in Nice, on the French Riviera, without phones and with very little French. They have to find each other in the city, make plans without texting and get around on their own.

Released on Netflix in February 2025, hosted by actress Kyoko Koizumi with Kuruma Takahira and Kemuri Matsui.

Dating the Way It Used to Work

Take away the phones and every date becomes a small logistics problem: where to meet, how to find someone again, what to do when they do not show up. That is the whole hook.

One rule gives each person a wish letter, which lets them take one other single on a day trip. With no phones, that letter is the one way the rules let anyone make a plan stick.

6. Badly in Love

Eleven singles who describe themselves as former delinquents, the people Japanese call yankii, live under one roof for 14 days and try to find a partner.

A passion project of Megumi, who also chairs the panel on The Boyfriend. The first season arrived on Netflix in December 2025, and a second followed in August 2026.

Who the Yankii Are

In Japan, yankii means the kids who dyed their hair, rode loud motorbikes and fought with rival schools. It is a whole subculture, with its own manga and movies, and plenty of yankii grow up to be very ordinary adults.

Japanese dating shows tend to open with stiff, polite first meetings. The whole pitch of this one is a cast that was never going to manage polite.

7. Last One Standing

FormatGenreLengthEmotional tags

A crime drama is unfolding: a painting has been stolen from a school. The cast is a mix of actors and comedians, and at any moment one of the actors can turn to a comedian and ask for a funny story. Everyone drops character, the comedian talks, and the least funny ones are eliminated, which means their characters are written out of the story.

Released on Netflix in March 2022 and led by the comedy duo Chidori. Its Japanese title is Talk Survivor!

A Show About Free Talk

Japanese comedians are judged heavily on free talk: telling a true story from their own life, on the spot, and making it land. Variety shows in Japan are built on it, and this show turns that skill into a survival game.

It became one of the most-watched shows on Netflix in Japan soon after it premiered, and two more seasons followed.

8. Hitoshi Matsumoto Presents Documental

Ten comedians are shut in a room for six hours. Each pays in a stake, and the goal is to make the others laugh without laughing yourself. Anyone caught laughing is penalized, repeat offenders are out, and the last one left takes the pot.

Created by comedian Hitoshi Matsumoto of Downtown and released on Prime Video in Japan in November 2016.

The Original Behind LOL

LOL: Last One Laughing, in whichever country you saw it, is this show with local comedians. Amazon took Documental's rules and remade it in many other countries.

Matsumoto watches from a monitor room and decides who has cracked, which makes him referee, host and audience at the same time.

9. Takeshi's Castle (2023)

FormatGenreLengthEmotional tags
Game showComedy, Competition2023 revivalFunny, Chaotic

Contestants try to storm the castle of Takeshi Kitano by getting through a series of obstacles, most of which end with someone falling into water or mud.

A 2023 Prime Video revival of the show that originally aired on TBS from 1986 to 1990.

Named After Its Lord

Takeshi Kitano, the same man who directed Hana-bi and Sonatine, played the lord of the castle in the original. In Japan he is famous both as a film director and as a TV comedian, and this show comes from the comedian side.

Many Americans first saw the original without knowing it. MXC, which ran on Spike TV in the 2000s, took footage from Takeshi's Castle and dubbed over it with a completely different, made-up commentary.

Chefs challenge one of the Iron Chefs in Kitchen Stadium, with a theme ingredient revealed at the start and one hour to make a full meal around it. A panel of judges tastes and scores.

The original Fuji TV series, hosted by actor Takeshi Kaga as the flamboyant Chairman Kaga.

Before Iron Chef America

Food Network aired the Japanese show with English dubbing, and it became popular enough in the US to lead to Iron Chef America. The original is where Kitchen Stadium, the theme ingredient and the chairman all come from.

For Japanese viewers in the 1990s it was a cooking show that behaved like a sports broadcast, with a play-by-play announcer and a reporter on the kitchen floor.

Where to Start

If you have never watched Japanese reality TV, start with Terrace House, because it is the format with nothing added: no prize, no host, no elimination, just the house and the studio panel. If those two parts hold you, every dating show above is built on the same pair.

Love Village is the one I would hand to anyone who thinks dating shows are only about twenty-somethings. The cast is older, the stakes feel higher, and the pink bell turns every confession into a moment you watch through your fingers.

Last One Standing is for the night you want to laugh instead. Its rules do not assume you know the comedians: a story is asked for, told and judged on the spot, so the only thing you need to follow is whether it lands.
