10 Best Anime & Films Set in Kyoto: Where to Stream Them in the US (2026)

Tokyo gets drawn because the studios are there. Kyoto gets drawn because somebody chose it, and that choice usually means the work wants something specific: the river, the covered shopping streets, the mountains closing in on three sides, a thousand years of things that happened on the same corner.

This list is ten of them, with a note on each about what is real. Kyoto is small enough to walk, so unlike a Tokyo list these locations are genuinely reachable in an afternoon. Where each one streams in the US is at the end of every entry.

1. The Night Is Short, Walk On Girl

FormatGenreLengthEmotional tags
Anime filmComedy, Fantasy, Romance93 minGiddy, Warm

A university student follows the girl he is in love with through a single night that will not end, from the drinking streets of Kiyamachi to a used-book fair to a guerrilla theatre performance, while she simply enjoys herself and never notices him.

Masaaki Yuasa, 2017, from Tomihiko Morimi's novel.

The Student City, Exactly

Kyoto has a very large student population and a nightlife built around it, and this film is that world compressed into one night. The bar-hopping along the Kiyamachi canal, the second-hand book fair at Shimogamo, the cramped theatre: all of it is real and all of it happens every year.

Yuasa animates drunkenness better than anyone. The sequence where the night stretches and the streets rearrange themselves is the most accurate depiction of a certain kind of evening I have seen, and I say that with some regret.

2. The Eccentric Family

FormatGenreLengthEmotional tags
Anime seriesFantasy, Comedy, Drama25 episodes (2 seasons)Warm, Wistful

A family of shape-shifting tanuki live in modern Kyoto alongside tengu and humans. Their father was caught and eaten by a human dining club, and the youngest son is trying to work out what kind of tanuki he wants to be.

Also from a Tomihiko Morimi novel, animated by P.A. Works in 2013.

The Most Kyoto Thing on This List

The premise sounds whimsical and the show is really about a city where the old things have not left. Shimogamo Shrine, where the family lives under the shrine forest, is a real Shinto site that has been there since before the capital moved here. The Kamo river delta where students sit in a line is real and they are there right now.

What Japanese viewers respond to is the tone. Kyoto has a reputation within Japan for a very particular kind of polite indirectness, and the tanuki politics in this show are that reputation given fur.

3. The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House

FormatGenreLengthEmotional tags
Live-action seriesDrama, Slice of life9 episodesGentle, Precise

Two girls come from Aomori to Kyoto at sixteen to train as maiko. One has the talent. The other does not, and instead becomes the makanai, the cook who feeds the house. The series follows a year of meals.

Hirokazu Kore-eda directed and supervised it for Netflix in 2023, from Aiko Koyama's manga.

The Only Live-Action Entry, and Why

Gion is the most photographed part of Kyoto and the least understood, because the okiya system that produces maiko is closed and tourists mostly see women walking to appointments. This is the inside of one of those houses, and the research is Kore-eda's, which is to say thorough.

The food is the subject. Each episode is built around a dish made for a household of teenagers who are training very hard, and the cooking is shot with the same patience he gives faces. It is the calmest thing on this list.

4. Tamako Market

FormatGenreLengthEmotional tags
Anime seriesComedy, Slice of life12 episodesCosy, Bright

A girl whose family runs a mochi shop in a covered shopping arcade goes about her ordinary year, complicated slightly by a talking bird from a distant country who arrives looking for a bride for his prince.

Kyoto Animation, 2013, directed by Naoko Yamada.

Demachi Masugata, Drawn Shop by Shop

The arcade is Demachi Masugata, a real shopping street near where the Takano and Kamo rivers meet, and the studio drew the actual shops. Local businesses leaned into it and some still have merchandise. You can buy mochi there and it is good.

The talking bird plot is the weakest part and the show knows it. What it is really doing is a year in a neighbourhood where everyone has known each other since before the protagonist was born, which is how those arcades actually work.

5. Tamako Love Story

FormatGenreLengthEmotional tags
Anime filmRomance, Drama83 minAching, Precise

The sequel film drops the talking bird almost entirely and becomes a story about the boy from the mochi shop across the arcade, who has been in love with Tamako since they were children, deciding to say so before they graduate.

Naoko Yamada, 2014. It runs 83 minutes.

Why It Is Listed Separately

Japanese fans will tell you the series is pleasant and the film is the reason to bother, and they are right. Yamada made A Silent Voice and Liz and the Blue Bird afterwards, and this is where her method arrives: feet, hands, the distance between two people on a staircase, almost nothing said aloud.

The baseball scene is the one people bring up. It is about a boy failing to say a sentence, and it is shot like a thriller.

6. Sound! Euphonium

FormatGenreLengthEmotional tags
Anime seriesDrama, Music, School39 episodes (3 seasons)Tense, Meticulous

A first-year joins a mediocre high school concert band the year a new teacher asks whether they actually want to win. Three seasons follow the auditions, the politics and the competition rounds.

Kyoto Animation, from 2015. It is set in Uji, south of Kyoto city, where the studio itself is.

The Bridge Everyone Photographs

Uji is Kyoto Prefecture rather than Kyoto city, and it is where the studio lives, which is why the backgrounds are so exact. The Uji river, the bridge, the shopping street by the station and Keihan Uji station itself are all drawn to the tile.

It became a pilgrimage destination to the point where the city produced its own maps. If you go, the tea is the other reason to be there. Uji matcha is the good stuff and it is grown a few minutes from the bridge in the show.

7. Liz & the Blue Bird

FormatGenreLengthEmotional tags
Anime filmDrama, Music91 minQuiet, Aching

Officially titled Liz and the Blue Bird. Two third-years in the same wind band, an oboist and a flautist, have been inseparable for years. The competition piece has a duet for them, and rehearsing it makes clear which of them is the bird that has to leave.

Naoko Yamada, 2018, a side story to Sound! Euphonium and set in the same Uji school.

The Same City, Almost Silent

Almost nothing is said aloud. The film watches feet in corridors, hands on instrument cases, the exact distance two people keep when one of them is about to be left behind. The school is the same one from the series and the corridors are the same corridors.

It is the quietest thing Kyoto Animation has made and the one people reach for when they want to argue Yamada is the best director working in animation. I would not argue back.

8. Kyousougiga

FormatGenreLengthEmotional tags
Anime seriesFantasy, Action10 episodesKaleidoscopic, Tender

A monk paints a copy of Kyoto that becomes a real place, and puts his family inside it. Generations later a girl with a hammer arrives from outside looking for the mother who left, and the mirror city starts coming apart.

Toei Animation, 2013. The visual language is built on the Choju-giga scrolls, the twelfth-century animal caricatures held at Kozan-ji in Kyoto.

The Reference Most Viewers Miss

The title means roughly mad, frolicking pictures, and it is a direct nod to the Choju-giga, which are often called the oldest manga and which live at a temple in the Kyoto hills. The show's rabbits and frogs come straight off those scrolls.

It is ten episodes and it front-loads its confusion badly, which is why it has a small audience. If you get past the first two, the family story underneath is one of the warmest in the medium.

9. Holmes of Kyoto

FormatGenreLengthEmotional tags
Anime seriesMystery, Slice of life12 episodesCalm, Informative

A high school girl takes a part-time job at an antique shop on Teramachi Sanjo and works alongside the owner's grandson, who can spot a forgery at a glance. Each case involves a piece of Kyoto craft and the person trying to misrepresent it.

Aired in 2018, adapting Mai Mochizuki's novels.

A Guidebook Disguised as a Mystery

The mysteries are slight. What the show is actually delivering is Kyoto craft: pottery, tea utensils, scrolls, and the shops on Teramachi where they are sold. The arcade is real and you can walk into shops much like the one in the show.

It is on this list because nothing else covers that part of the city. Kyoto's economy has run on this trade for centuries, and the series treats a tea bowl with the seriousness other shows give a murder.

10. The Tale of the Princess Kaguya

FormatGenreLengthEmotional tags
Anime filmFantasy, Drama137 minDevastating, Delicate

A bamboo cutter finds a tiny girl inside a stalk and raises her. She grows unnaturally fast, and he moves the family to the capital to make her a noblewoman, which is not what she wants. The story is the oldest in Japanese literature.

Isao Takahata, 2013, drawn in charcoal and watercolour. It was his last film.

Why It Counts as Kyoto

The capital in the tenth-century tale is Heian-kyo, which is Kyoto, and the film's mansion sequences are built on Heian court architecture and etiquette that the city still preserves in its festivals. Whether you file it as Kyoto or as a folktale is a fair question. Everyone here files it as Kyoto.

The sequence where she runs from the banquet, the drawing coming apart into strokes as she goes, is the most extraordinary minute of animation Ghibli produced. Takahata spent eight years on this film and did not make another.

Where to Start

If you want one, it is The Night Is Short, Walk On Girl, which is 93 minutes, on HBO Max, and takes place over a single impossible night that moves from Kiyamachi to a second-hand book fair to a student theatre festival. It is the best film ever made about being young in this city.

If you are actually visiting, the two most walkable are Tamako Market, whose shopping street is Demachi Masugata near the river fork, and The Eccentric Family, which uses the real Shimogamo Shrine, the Kamo delta and Mount Daimonji. Both are a short bus ride apart.

One that belongs here and is not streaming in the US: The Tatami Galaxy, by the same director and author as The Night Is Short, set in the same student Kyoto and better than either. If it appears on a US service, watch it first. I have left it off rather than list something you cannot reach.
