Western fantasy usually starts with a map. There is a kingdom, a dark lord, a prophecy, and the story is about whether the prophecy comes true. Japanese fantasy tends to start somewhere stranger: a rule about how magic costs you something, or a god who is also a wolf, or a world where alchemy follows accounting principles.
That difference is why this genre travels so well. The ten below are the fantasy anime I would hand to someone who says they do not watch anime, and most of them are not really about the fantasy at all. Streaming info for the US is included with each.

Two brothers attempt to resurrect their mother using alchemy. The attempt costs one of them an arm and a leg, and the other his entire body. They set out to find a way back, and discover their country was built on something much worse than their mistake.
Alchemy here obeys one law: to gain something, you must give up something of equal value. The series never breaks that rule for convenience.
Why It Endures
This has topped Japanese fan rankings for over a decade, and the usual explanation is that it simply does everything competently. I think it is more specific than that: the magic system is an ethical argument disguised as physics.
Every villain in this show is a demonstration of what happens when someone decides the exchange rate does not apply to them. Sixty-four episodes, and the finale answers every question the first episode raised. Almost nothing in any medium is built this tightly.

2. Attack on Titan

Humanity survives inside three concentric walls, hiding from enormous humanoid creatures that eat people for no discernible reason. When the outer wall breaks, a boy watches his mother die and swears to kill every last one of them.
That is the premise for about a season and a half. Then the show reveals what it is actually about.
Why It Endures
The first season sells itself on horror and the extraordinary movement of the manoeuvre gear. What kept me watching for a decade was the structural trick: this is a mystery where every answer makes the moral situation worse.
By the final season, the question of who deserves sympathy has been inverted so many times that Japanese fans were arguing about the ending for months, and are still arguing. Whatever you conclude about the finale, no other fantasy series has been this willing to make its audience complicit.

3. Princess Mononoke

A young prince is cursed while killing a boar god and travels west to find a cure. He arrives in a valley where an ironworks run by a genuinely progressive woman is destroying a forest defended by gods and a girl raised by wolves.
He refuses to take a side. The film refuses to let him stay neutral.
Why It Endures
Lady Eboshi employs former sex workers and lepers, gives them dignity and wages, and is razing a sacred forest to do it. San is defending her home by murdering workers. Neither is wrong in a way that resolves.
Growing up in Japan, this film is not treated as environmentalist messaging. It reads as a story about the moment when a culture stops negotiating with the natural world and starts extracting from it. That transition really happened here, and the film is grieving it without pretending it could have gone otherwise.

4. Frieren: Beyond Journey's End

An elf mage spent ten years travelling with three companions to defeat the demon king. For her, ten years is a rounding error. She wanders off for half a century, comes back, and finds the human hero on his deathbed.
The rest of the series is her retracing that journey, trying to understand people whose lives ended while she was not paying attention.
Why It Endures
The premise sounds like a gimmick and is actually a device for the most patient character writing in modern fantasy. Frieren's problem is not immortality, it is that she never treated time as scarce, so she never treated anyone as urgent.
The magic duels are excellent, precise and rule-bound. But the sequence people talk about in Japan is a small one: Frieren looking for a flower field because a friend once mentioned liking them. That is the whole show. Grief expressed as errands.

5. Castle in the Sky

Why It Endures
Almost every adventure anime made since has taken something from this: the airship design language, the ruined civilisation overgrown with plants, the villain who wants the ancient weapon.
What holds up beyond influence is the pacing. Miyazaki lets long stretches pass with no dialogue while machines work and clouds move, then executes an action sequence with total clarity. In Japan, the moment the destruction spell is spoken has become genuine cultural shorthand, to the point where broadcasts of the film crash social media when it airs.

6. Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind

A thousand years after industrial civilisation destroyed itself, a toxic jungle spreads across the world, defended by enormous insects. A princess of one of the last inhabited valleys studies the jungle rather than fighting it.
Then a wrecked airship brings a weapon from the old world into her valley.
Why It Endures
This predates Studio Ghibli and effectively created it. What surprises people watching it now is how unresolved it is. Nausicaä's empathy is genuine and it is also not enough. The film ends with a truce, not a solution.
The manga Miyazaki wrote alongside it runs far darker and is worth reading if the film lands for you. He spent twelve years on it and reportedly ended up disagreeing with his own movie. That tension is visible on screen, and it is why the film still feels unsettled rather than dated.

The fantasy mechanism turns out to be tied to a shrine ritual, a comet, and a much older idea about how time works.
Why It Endures
I have written elsewhere that I think this film is overrated at the level of plot, and I still do. What I underrated for years is how carefully it uses Shinto structure rather than generic magic.
Musubi, the concept the grandmother explains, is a real idea about connection as a physical braid: threads, time, bodies and rivers all tied by the same principle. The body swapping is not a comedy premise borrowed from Western films. It is a ritual failure. Once you see it that way the ending stops being sentimental and starts being folkloric.

8. My Hero Academia

Eighty percent of the population has a superpower, so society reorganised itself around them: hero licensing, agency rankings, a school system that streams children by ability. One boy is born without one.
He is given a power by the world's greatest hero, and then has to survive a school designed for people who have had theirs since birth.
Why It Endures
The worldbuilding is the fantasy achievement here, more than the fights. Everything follows from the premise: insurance law, celebrity culture, the underclass of people whose powers are useless or frightening.
The villains are almost all products of that system failing them, which is a heavier idea than most shonen attempts. It is also very long, and season quality varies. Watch the first two, and if the sports festival arc does not convince you, nothing later will.

9. Ranking of Kings

Bojji is the crown prince: deaf, mute, physically incapable of holding a sword, and openly mocked by his own kingdom. His first real friend is a shadow that can understand him.
The art is rounded and simple, like a children's storybook. The story is not.
Why It Endures
The visual style is doing deliberate work. Because everything looks soft and safe, the series can put genuine cruelty on screen without becoming grim, and it can let a character be redeemed without it feeling cheap.
What I appreciate most is that Bojji never gets a power-up. He gets faster, more perceptive and harder to discourage, and the show insists that is enough. It is one of the few fantasy series where the protagonist's disability is neither erased nor turned into a metaphor.

10. Demon Slayer: Entertainment District Arc

Demon hunters go undercover in Yoshiwara, the walled pleasure district of 1910s Tokyo, hunting a demon that has been feeding there for decades.
The second half is essentially one continuous battle across collapsing buildings.
Why It Endures
The fantasy here is specifically Japanese and specifically historical. Breathing techniques come from real martial arts terminology, the demons follow folkloric logic about sunlight and hunger, and the setting is a real district with a documented, ugly history.
Ufotable's compositing turned this arc into a national event in Japan. But the reason it belongs on a fantasy list rather than an action one is the final flashback, which explains what the two demons were before, and asks you to hold that against everything they have done.

Final Thoughts
The through-line I notice in all of these is cost. Alchemy demands equivalent exchange. Frieren's immortality costs her the ability to notice people leaving. Mononoke's forest gods cannot win without becoming the thing they hate. Japanese fantasy is rarely about acquiring power, it is about what the power takes from you.
If you have never watched anime seriously and want one entry point, make it Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. Sixty-four episodes, no filler, and the plot resolves every thread it opens. If you want something quieter, Frieren does more with silence than most shows manage with speeches.
And if you want to understand where all of this came from, Nausicaä was 1984. Miyazaki was already asking the questions the rest of the genre is still working through.
